Iran claims to manufacture its own S-300

Frustrated by how long Russia has taken to deliver its S-300 missile defense system, Iran now claims that it has manufactured its own.
The Iranian TV channel Al-Alam reports that, during the April 18, 2010 Army Day celebrations in Tehran, Iran unveiled a domestically manufactured missile system equivalent to the Russian S-300 system. In recent months, Iranian leaders have declared that if Russia continues to delay the delivery of S-300 missiles to Iran, the country would produce an identical system.
So, do we believe this?

What could go wrong?

Quite a present along with Ahmedinejad's comments that Israel is a "malignant microbe" that should be annihilated. This is the reality of what Iran portends for Israel.

In the face of such virulent hate, Israel deserves a very Happy Independence Day!

Iran announced last week that they were going to be building their own missile defense system that would be fully deployed by the end of the year since they don't seem to be getting Russia's missile defense system any time soon.

This week, they claim to have built this missile defense system already. They must have found a Missile Defense Shake 'n' Bake kit. Perhaps it's a Hidden Imam Special.

Their bravado does seem cartoonish and ludicrous at times but we still can't afford to assume that they will never be capable of carrying out their annihilist threats against Israel. We have to take every one of these threats seriously, especially since their most prominent and persistent rocket and missile delivery systems reside with terrorists who live on Israel's north and south borders.

just because someone says it doesnt mean it to be true

Bacci40,

You will note that I headlined it "Iran claims" and that I ended by asking whether we should believe this. Yes, I am somewhat skeptical. But given that we have little real knowledge of what is going on in Iran, I cannot discount it entirely.

You will recall that a couple of months ago when Iran claimed to have enriched uranium from 3.5% to 20%, those claims were greeted with skepticism... until the IAEA confirmed them two days later.

There's a real danger here. While we don't have to jump on every rumor as being true, and while we still need to think for ourselves, I would not discount everything said by the Iranian government. They're a hell of a lot more reliable than the New York Times these days.

No way Iran could make a Patriot PAC-3 or S-300 quality missile system.

Their fighter is just an F-5 with a new tail. Now I'm not going to underestimate Iran's technology, they've kept the F-14 going for decades and they are on the verge of going nuclear and have ballistic missiles but the radars and guidance for advanced SAMs are much tougher and more expensive.
