An ill-timed report

Someone in Israel is trying to make Prime Minister Netanyahu's relations with President Obama even more strained than they are already. On Tuesday, as Netanyahu was about to go into a meeting with Obama it happened again. As Netanyahu was arriving at the White House, Haaretz reported that final approval had been granted to build build 20 new Jewish housing units on the site of the Shepherd's Hotel in the Shimon HaTzadik (Sheikh Jarrah) neighborhood of Jerusalem. The Shepherd's Hotel is privately owned land and it is actually owned by an American named Irving Moskowitz.

The version of Haaretz's story that is currently online is apparently not the original version. Apparently the first version left out two pertinent facts, one of which still doesn't appear in the Haaretz story (at least at this writing). First, the approval was issued last Thursday. And second, the approval was automatic following the payment of a fee by the developers on March 15. The real approval was the one that was granted last July.

But whoever managed to time that report from Haaretz (and it may have been Haaretz itself, someone from the rival Kadima party or a leak at the Jerusalem City Council, where all building approvals are now frozen), the result was an embarrassment for Prime Minister Netanyahu, who would rather these things be done quietly under the radar screen.
"This is exactly what we expect Prime Minister Netanyahu to get control of," an administration official said Tuesday night. "The current drip-drip-drip of projects in East Jerusalem impedes progress."

Netanyahu chose his right-wing "coalition over Obama, plain and simple," one former Israeli official commented.
Well, of course he did. Do you think he'd rather go to new elections and shut down the country for three months with Iran on the verge of nuclear weapons?

My guess is it was Haaretz. They have a habit of making up stories to intentionally damage Israel.

Who are these lunatics trying to throw Israel under the bus?

For the sake of argument, who will want them if there is no Israel to go home to? No one will want such scummy traitors. Where do they think they and their families will go?

These people are psychopaths.

This is part of a drive for REGIME CHANGE in Israel. They want Bibi OUT! G-d forbid.

There is a "leftist mole" or "moles" somewhere in the govt. and this is deliberately timed to work against Bibi, and for a change in PM. The good Israelis must find out who it is and do something about it. Trace it back to one of Clinton's "friends" she acknowledged at the AIPAC conf. or to J Street; there's a definite connec. betw them and the leftists in Israel, up to NO GOOD!

I'm interested in seeing a title search in the areas of these building permits. Because, if some American guy owns the land in question, wouldn't he be within his rights to build whatever he wants (in accordance with Israel's laws, whatever is lawful)? And could we please see title searches on other building projects going on in East Jerusalem? I mean, are the Obama people trying to establish a situation where Israeli or Palestinian Arabs can build or farm (whether they actually own the land or not, and whether it complies with the laws or not) and Jews can't? What on earth?

Ill timed?

Perfectly timed, as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, Netanyahu thinks it's ill timed, Therein lies Israel's problem, at home, not in Washington.

And the problem with a project approved last year, is what, exactly? Israel never misled America about building in Jerusalem. The two countries have agreed to disagree about the policy. Jerusalem is Israel's capital and Israel doesn't need the world's permission to build in it.

as the land is owned by mr moskowitz, i see no reason why building there should cause any fuss

who cares if the information was leaked

"Netanyahu chose his right-wing "coalition over Obama, plain and simple," one former Israeli official commented." As obvious as this statement is I think it should be also said that in doing so Netanyahu also chose Israel.
We suffer under a current US Administration in which most mistakenly and quite naively think all things will be smiles and sunshine if things go back to pre-war borders and there are a few who more would have no problem if sniper fire again rained down on Israeli's from the Golan Height's. The rest are just party hacks who do what they are told to do and believe what they are told to believe.
As an American and a supporter of Israel I say these things with a heavy heart. I cannot believe what has become of the government of my country. Even if I take the emotion I feel over this out of the equation I am mystified at the logic and foresight in taking an adversarial stance against an ally of such importance and with who we have such a close relationship with in favor of an adversary who seeks our destruction, murders our civilians and abuses it's own citizens! It defies common sense, it spits on morality and has not a thing to do with justice. It is wrong.
I pray Western Society comes to its senses soon.
