'Peace,' Jordanian style

The royal family in Jordan (or at least King Hussein) may have made peace with Israel, but the local population has not. Here's an al-Jazzeera report on protests against the importation of Israeli produce into Jordan. You'll note that even the economic arguments are made only against Israeli imports and not against imports generally. For now, at least, Jordan's government is officially sticking to its treaty obligations.

For the record, I'd be thrilled if there were more Jordanian imports here to drive the price of produce down. There were many during the Shmitta year and the year after, but if they exist now, they are not marked.

Let's go to the videotape.

The truth is Jordan has benefited far more from the peace with Israel than Israel does and most Jordanians are not aware of it. It does highlight the limits to making peace with the Arab World.
