Iraq to sue Israel over Osirak?

The Iraqi legislature is considering legislation that would require the government to sue Israel for billions of dollars in compensation for the destruction of Iraq's nuclear reactor (by the pilots pictured at left) in June 1981. Of course, they would have to find a way to do so without recognizing the existence of the State of Israel.
The suit, if it is filed, will use the United Nations condemnation of the Israeli strike as proof that Israel unfairly caused Iraq financial losses.

Supporters of the initiative say it does not indicate support for former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, whose regime built the Osiraq facility. Any money gained from the suit would be used to build the current state of Iraq.

The MPs' plan to sue may be linked to a lawsuit filed by former Iraqi Jews, who have sued for compensation for properties in Iraq that their families were forced to abandon when they were driven from the country by increasing Muslim violence following the establishment of the State of Israel. The Iraqi government claims that Iraqi Jews who left for Israel did so by choice.
There is not a legal remedy for every perceived 'wrong.' And in this case, destroying Osirak was the right thing to do. Just ask Dick Cheney.

Heh.

I would love for the Iraqis to try. Then we could sue them back for all the damage caused by their scuds in the Gulf War.

Israel could file counter-suit for the theft of Jewish property and assets in Iraq worth in the billions.

I think that will give them pause about suing Israel over Osirak. What's sauce for the gander is also sauce for the goose as well.

Iraq was (and, to my knowledge STILL IS) in a state of war with Israel, and has been since 1948. Given that Israel has kicked Iraq's ass every time their forces have been in conflict with each other, it looks like Israel is the victor. Further, since Iraq initiated the war between them, Iraq as the aggressor actually owes Israel reparations for all of the costs (human and financial) associated with defending itself against Iraq over the last 61 years.

Besides, if the suit goes forward, Israel should also counter-sue for the cost of training its pilots for the raid, the cost of fuel, depreciation on its aircraft and the bombs. Iraq, as a signatory to the NPT, had no legal right to build the Osirak facility - Israel merely acted as the unpaid agent of the Internation Atomic Energy Commission.

The short version of the above is: "Fuck you, Iraq, come and collect it!"

No surprise here.

This and other societies are caught in the fantasies fed to them by their religion and those evil people who 'interpret'the meaning of all things: the result is a culture of victimization, hatred and delusions as to how the world in the 21st century actually works.
