So much for the 'military wing' and the 'political wing'
A lot of westerners like to fool themselves that Hezbullah (and other terror organizations) have a 'military wing' and a 'political wing.' In fact, last month, Britain said that it would begin to talk to Hezbullah's 'political wing.' Maybe this interview with Hezbullah's number 2, Naim Qassem, will disabuse the West of the notion that there's any such distinction. Neither Qassem nor Washington distinguish between the Shiite militant group's political wing, which has members serving in the Lebanese Cabinet and parliament, and its military wing, preparing for the next round of battle against Israel. "Hezbollah has a single leadership," said the 57-year-old cleric in a rare interview with an American reporter recently.But don't expect that to stop any European 'peace activists' from idolizing Hezbullah.
"All political, social and jihad work is tied to the decisions of this leadership," he said. "The same leadership that directs the parliamentary and government work also leads jihad actions in the struggle against Israel."

Or Hamas for whom the same convenient distinction is made. Why any one would be so naive as to think there are "moderates" in the terrorist organizations is beyond me.
Norman, the British government (as well as the rest of the EU) wants very much to engage with both Hezbollah and Hamas. The distinction between "political" and "military" wings is just a useful fiction to obscure an otherwise transparent surrender to terror.
The UK is operating on the Northern Ireland model for negotiations which conveniently bifurcated the IRA and Sinn Fein but the analogy between the situation there and the conflict in the Middle East is a false one. The IRA was not genocidal and did not want to eradicate Great Britain.
FinanceDoc is exactly right regarding the IRA-derived terminology.
In the Palestinian context, the idea of wings is a ludicrous fabrication to ease the provision of Western aid to terrorist movements.
However, we may need to go beyond considering such aid as surrender to terror. Instead, it may reflect a congruence of views with the terrorists as regards Israel.
RAM, in educated circles in the West, the Jews again are seen as the source of all the world's problems. The worldwide wave of anti-Semitism witnessed during the Gaza campaign is reflective of this new Western mood. Its ugly and its dark. If you think the screws haven't been tightened yet upon the Jewish State, just wait. Legitimizing Hezbollah/Hamas is one way to apply them. This year, under portents far from auspicious, Israel's new government has its work cut out for it.
