It's official: US not going to Durban II

The announcement was just made by State Department spokesman Robert Wood and reported by Israel Radio.

Israel is pleased that the US is not going but ticked off that the President of Switzerland is going to meet with Ahmadinejad while he is in Geneva. Given that the Swiss Foreign Minister already met with Ahmadinejad, no one should be surprised at its President.

Without the US present, the EU will have to pull out, too. Canada, Italy and Israel are already on record as boycotting the conference. But we will treated to the sight of racists, bigots and anti-Semites keelhauling the Jewish State all week along. Its appropriate indeed that Durban II should open on Adolf Hitler's birthday. He would be right at home with the proceedings.

I had predicted elsewhere that any pretense at going had been posturing by Obama, anyway; he wants to show the world "Look, I was ready to talk, but they are being unreasonable!" Hopefully, this ploy will work at least as well as an up-front "No, you're all racist hate-mongers" would have done.
