Shame on the Central Conference of American 'rabbis'
For three years, Los Angeles' Simon Wiesenthal Center fought a bitter battle against the Islamic Movement's Northern Front in an effort to build its Museum of Tolerance in a central Jerusalem location that will revitalize the city and make the museum a central tourist location. I have discussed that battle on several occasions. (Here and here too). (Click on the image at left to enlarge it and see a Muslim site plan for the area dating to 1931).After trying to avoid the issue for three years, and causing the Center to run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees and expenses, Israel's Supreme Court finally ruled in favor of the Wiesenthal Center three months ago in an unprecedented 119-page decision. On Thursday, the Central Conference of American 'rabbis,' the 'rabbinic' body of 'Reform Judaism,' passed a resolution urging the Wiesenthal Center to move the museum anyway.
"We would protest, in the strongest terms, not only the desecration, but any removal of a Jewish cemetery, no matter what the purpose. Therefore, it is self-evident that we must oppose the removal of another people's sacred burial ground, no matter how worthy the purpose," reads a resolution passed by the Central Conference of American Rabbis meeting in Jerusalem. The Reform 'rabbis' are a bunch of hypocrites. The Reform movement's own Jerusalem headquarters, Hebrew Union College, is across the street from the cemetery and may sit on land that was at one time part of the cemetery. Run your mouse over the bottom right of this map.
"While the Israeli Supreme Court has permitted the Wiesenthal Center to move ahead, an organization with high-minded goals like those of the Museum of Tolerance cannot be satisfied with mere adherence to the law."
...
"We are not building on the Muslim cemetery but on a Jerusalem municipal car park which for the past 50 years has served Jews Christians and Muslims, including Reform Conservative and Orthodox rabbis as well as priests and imams," said Rabbi Marvin Hier.

What a shanda! When it comes to tolerance, the Reform liberals have none of it when Jews have the temerity to exercise a legal right affirmed by Israel's Supreme Court, not exactly a right-wing body!
Just what does the Reform Central Conference have against a Museum Of Tolerance in Jerusalem? Its not like the Simon Wiesenthal Center usurped any one's rights in the city.
Carl made a good point that Muslims themselves invalidated the gravesite status of the Jerusalem area in question in various religious rulings going as far back as the 1930s for their own commercial projects. No body at rest would be disturbed by the Wiesenthal Center project since no human remains are buried there. One would think the Central Conference "rabbis" has displayed some reading comprehension of the matter. The controversy is entirely bogus and there is no real legal issue as I said above and there is no moral issue either, considering the fact Muslims have no respect either for the dead or for their own holy sites.
The Israeli Supreme Court finally reached the right decision. And the Central Conference's position seems to be Jews should not build in Jerusalem if it would offend Muslims. But then only liberal Jews ignorant of Islamic history and Sharia law would endorse degrading restrictions that only discriminate against Jews.
If it was Muslims disinterring their own dead to make way for a construction project, there'd be nary a peep out of them about it.
FWIW, there won't be a Museum of Tolerance anywhere in the Arab/Muslim World any time soon.
Just don't look for the Reform liberals to apologize to the Wiesenthal Center for their ill-considered rush to judgment and and to stop telling Jews to grovel like good Dhimmis. That's the most completely revolting aspect of the statement they put out.
Now let's hope after all this inconsiderable expense and pointless delay, that Museum finally gets built!
Even Meah Shearim is partly on cemetery land.
Nothing lasts forever not even death. And who really - will look after all of us after we are long gone from this world?
YMedad,
Is that why they riot there all the time?
:-)
....a shame, if Israel didn't recognize Sharia Law in the first place, none of this would be an issue. Also, regarding the Reform "rabbis", they are part of the same Jewish Establishment with the SWC, which has been known to take similar awkward stands.
