Iraqi MP: 'Only nations living in the past produce martyrs'

I don't know what amazes me more about this interview: that the Bush administration managed to create a vibrant democracy in Iraq in which someone with views like this can be elected to parliament, or that al-Jazeera Arabic ran two interviews with Iyad Jamal al-Din and everyone remained calm and no one put a fatwa on him (that I know of). It would be a shame to see this kind of thing disappear in the name of Hopenchange.

Let's go to the videotape.

Maybe I'm a fool but I still hold out hope that one day Iraq will reconcile with Israel. From the conversations I've had with Iraqi bloggers it doesn't seem impossible.

Its remarkable to hear a Muslim cleric praise secularism and condemn the love of death ideology that's taken over Islam. Perhaps some day his fellow co-religionists will get it.

Death and destruction isn't leading the Muslim World anywhere.

& look what they started in Turkey, last year:

I had always feared the worst because of the advance of technology: that we could not wait for Islam to mature past the murderous stage before they got hold of world-killing weapons - but I forgot to factor in the positive side of technology: communication!

There IS hope - & not just in a campaign slogan!!

Gives one hope that maybe the rest of these idiots will grow up and become civilized.

Not a chance!

There are zero Jews left in Iraq and you wouldn't want to be caught there. The Christians are being killed and driven from their homes while Sunni bomb Shiites and both bomb the Kurds.

You really gotta be hooked on hope'n change to drink this kool aid.

I prefer Whiskey!

Not Heaven, But Earth Is What's Important

That is precisely what Rabbi Manis Friedman said must be learned, that building THIS world is what's important, not destroying it in the hope that such violence will secure one a place in "heaven."

The fact that he is clearly stating it is a sign of real progress, and that others must also feel that way. Slowly, slowly, we are inching our way toward the real Messianic Era, may it be soon.
