Hopenchange: EU resuming relations with Syria

Now that the United States is getting ready to resume relations with Syria, Europe doesn't want to be left behind. On Monday, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner visited the chinless ophthalmologist in Damascus.
A senior European Union official visiting Syria has described the country's role in the region as "essential," in the latest signs of improvement for the nation's strained international relations.

The meeting between EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and President Bashar Assad comes after years of isolation for Syria. The Syrian news agency said Monday that the meeting discussed the Syria-EU partnership agreement, which was revived in December after being on hold since 2004.

Heh.
