Barak to call for Olmert's resignation?

The one thing Prime Minister Ehud K. Olmert really fears in life is that the Labor party will withdraw from his coalition, leaving him without a majority. Tonight, that possibility has come onto the horizon.

On Tuesday, Long Island businessman Morris (Moshe) Talansky gave a deposition before a Jerusalem court in which he described having given Olmert a total of $150,000 in cash in envelopes. The 'gifts' were given on ten occasions. He also painted a picture of Olmert as a hedonist, who insisted on first class airfares, luxury hotel suites and exotic vacations, all at his constituents' expense. Tonight, it seems that even defense minister and Labor party leader Ehud Barak may have had enough.
According to a Channel 1 report, defense minster and Labor Party chairman Ehud Barak is considering calling on Olmert to resign or suspend himself and may approach the minister with such a demand on Wednesday.

One senior Labor official said he believed the party should remain in the coalition for the time being, but another party member said "continuing to sit at the cabinet table is very difficult."
Later, Barak had another statement:
Following Morris Talansky's testimony in the investigation against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak told one of his party members that "in light of the new situation that has arisen we must gather and discuss what is to be done. We cannot conduct business as usual after what the testimony has exposed."
Hmm.

I don't think Barak had enough. I think he sees an opportunity to advance himself.

As I mentioned, the longer people stay around Olmert, the longer its doing damage to them as well. Don't tell me Ehud Barak is shocked by those revelations. He's knows precisely the kind of person Ehud Olmert is. Its going to be interesting to see how Olmert maintains his denial of ever taking a bribe in view of Morris Talansky's very damaging testimony in court. This was a political backer of Olmert who knew him for a long time and not some political enemy who had an axe to grind. And Olmert still wants to wait for a formal indictment before clearing his name tells us who he really puts first as Prime Minister.
