Ahmadinejad to perform the Hajj?

In another sign of the continuing rapprochement between Saudi King Abdullah and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Ahmadinejad has been invited to perform the Hajj - the pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims are supposed to perform once in their lifetime. He is the first Islamic Republic President to ever be invited. The Hajj - which begins on Tuesday - will be the second time Ahmadinejad and Abdullah will appear together in public in the last two weeks.

According to DEBKA, this indicates Saudi acceptance of Iran as a regional power and pulls the rug out from underneath any western efforts at imposing sanctions on Iran for its nuclear activities.
