UN Ambassador Gillerman: Ooom Shmoom

I believe that it was Golda Meir who first coined the phrase "Ooom Shmoom," a derisive reference in colloquial Hebrew to the United Nations (called the "Ooom" in Hebrew). Yesterday, Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Gillerman, gave the same advice to his government: ignore the UN.

The latest reason for Gillerman's advice was Friday's 156-7 vote (with six abstentions) in the General Assembly to "deeply deplore" the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, in particular the accidental Beit Hanun killings, and to call on Israel to immediately halt its operation and pull its troops out of the Gaza Strip. I think we pulled our troops out a year ago - in fact, that is the problem. A last-minute addition calls on the Palestinian Authority to take action to bring an end to violence, including the firing of rockets on Israeli territory. Don't hold your breath.

For the record, the countries that voted against the resolution were Israel, the US, Australia, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau. The six who abstained were Canada, Ivory Coast, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The entire European Union Eurabia voted in favor of the resolution. Think about that the next time you go on vacation. I would love to see El Al institute service to Sydney and Melbourne.
