On to the Litani

Tomorrow morning, Israel's national security cabinet will debate a proposal to expand the current military operation to the Litani River in a bid to rid southern Lebanon of Katyusha rocket launchers. The proposal is expected to pass the security cabinet. Ground forces will operate until the Litani River, while air, naval and artillery operations will also take place north of the Litani.

The Prime Minister's office and the Foreign Ministry are said to be wary of the operation's expansion, thinking that it could adversely impact efforts by the United States and France to win a cease fire in the UN Security Council under conditions that will leave the IDF in place in southern Lebanon until an international force arrives.
