Hezbullah rockets could reach Haifa and the Sharon region

YNet is reporting this morning that the government fears that Katyusha rockets in Hezbullah's possession in South Lebanon could hit Haifa and the heavily populated Sharon region. The government decided to go ahead with the current operation in Lebanon despite that risk.

Israel is demanding that the international community enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1559, which calls on the Lebanese government to control the internationally-recognized border between Israel and Lebanon. Up to now, it has been controlled by Hezbullah.

Last night, the Cabinet met in an extended forum owing to Israel’s additional front in the Gaza Strip in the south. During a meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office in Tel Aviv, the government was debriefed by intelligence chiefs, including heads of the Mossad, Shin Bet and GHQ.

According to the intelligence chiefs, the present Hizbullah attack was expected. Further, they said Hizbullah would be happy to declare an immediate ceasefire and sit down to the negotiating table to discuss a prisoner exchange. Israel has rejected that option.

Israel fears Hizbullah will retaliate for the IDF attacks with long-range rockets it keeps in south Lebanon; these rockets are capable of reaching populated areas in Haifa and even the Sharon region (between Haifa and Tel Aviv), and can also strike strategic facilities such as the refineries near Haifa or the power station in Hadera (about midway between Haifa and Tel Aviv).

The firing of rockets at these areas would put Israel in a situation it has not faced in decades.

While there was no formal declaration of war, none is required under Israeli law.

I knew this would happen.

I just would like to see Israel go after the terrorists with full force. Enough pussy footing. The world hates Israel no matter what it does, so why doesn't Israel simply do what it has to do to survive?

Period.

my thoughts are with you at this terrible time. I sit here in Melbourne suffering only from our cold winter, wishing Israel would wipe these bastards off the map. I only wish it was that simple, Israeli lives are too valuable. Israel shouldn't have to face this alone. But the politics of the world may yet again force the only civilised people in this area to take the 'superior' path while the criminal aggressors are calmed into temporary quiet.
