Blair backs Israel

British Prime Minister Tony Blair refused to call on Israel to unilaterally cease fire today as operations in Lebanon continued. Blair insisted that Hezbullah must first free the Jewish soldiers that it kidnapped and stop firing rockets at Israel.

Blair told MP's at his weekly House of Commons question session that Hezbullah has to make the first move to stop the hostilities:
This would stop now if the soldiers who were kidnapped wrongly ... were released. It would stop if the rockets stopped coming into Haifa, deliberately to kill innocent civilians.

If those two things happened, let me promise ... I would be the first out there saying 'Israel should halt this operation.'
Blair said that it is impossible to return to negotiations on the 'roadmap for peace' unless Israel feels secure.
