Rewarding terror
Yesterday, Islamic Jihad shot a Katyusha rocket from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel. Fortunately, the Katyusha, which has a range of 20 kilometers, went only 3.5 kilometers, and landed in a chicken coop in Netiv HaAsara, where it killed some chickens, but no people.
As a reward for their great aim, Comrade Peretz decided today to open the Karni crossing in both directions. As some of you may recall, the Karni Crossing has been closed off and on since January due to Palestinian terror attacks (and the 'alerts' relating thereto), but today Comrade Peretz decided to open it.
Peretz announced his decision during his first visit to an army base since becoming defense minister two weeks ago, visiting the Northern Gaza Brigade headquarters outside of kibbutz Nahal Oz. According to the Jerusalem Post:
During a security assessment he held at the base together with IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz and OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant, Peretz said that the defense establishment was "studying" the Katyusha rocket fire and raising different ways to deal with the threat. The army, he added, did not intend to change its current anti-Kassam tactics which included IAF missile strikes and daily artillery barrages on [the empty fields that serve as CiJ] Kassam launch sites.
"The residents of the Gaza Strip need to understand that Israel has no interest in escalating the situation," Peretz said. "The fact that the Palestinian Authority allows radical elements to do as they wish is what is turning the civilian population in Gaza into hostages."
Until today, that is. When Peretz released them from being hostages.
