Policeman indicted for assault at Amona
A horseback-riding policeman has been charged with assault for his actions at 'Amona' two months ago. If justice is to be served, this should be the first indictment of many. The Police Investigative Department has indicted David Edri, a mounted policeman who took part in the evacuation of the illegal outpost Amona two months ago, for assault.
The indictment stated that during the evacuation, Edri had been instructed to disperse a group of protestors. He reportedly headed his horse at a group of protestors and charged at them at full speed, Israel Radio said Sunday.
One of the demonstrators was Yehuda Etzion, who was reportedly trampled beneath the horse's legs and sustained a number of severe blows, which included a concussion. Etzion subsequently filed a formal complaint against Edri.
Edri's case has been referred to police disciplinary action, but it is unclear whether or not he will be suspended from his position. [Say what? Shouldn't it be routine that an officer who is indicted should be suspended from the force until the indictment is resolved? CiJ]
Arutz Sheva has more specifics:
The indictment states, "Edry spurred on his horse and galloped towards Yehuda Etzion, who was talking at that time with [Yesha Council member] Adi Mintz. Edri caused the horse to gallop towards where Etzion was standing, at a pace faster than would be considered reasonable, hit him with the horse and knocked him to the ground, went over him and trampled him under the horse's legs." [This is considered to be 'necessary force' by the Israeli police? CiJ]
As a result, the indictment states, Etzion "hit his head on the ground, and was caused many bruises on his entire body, including internal bleeding in his right foot and a cut in his skull... Edry attacked Etzion illegally and caused him genuine injury."
Etzion himself says that he continued to feel pain for a full month after the incident. He told Arutz-7 that he is convinced that the attack was purposeful.
The Land of Israel legal forum said it has more evidence against other policemen regarding additional cases of police brutality at Amona.
