4,000 Americans died so a democratic Iraq could ban travel to Israel

More than 4,000 Americans died so that Iraq could have a parliament, and one of the first actions that parliament is taking is to ban travel to Israel.
The bill was proposed following a number of incidents at the Bagdad airport. A local security officer working there said the passport had caught a number of Iraqi officials carrying passports with Israeli entry visas. The officer, speaking on a condition of anonymity, reported that the passports of some nine high-profile Iraqi politicians were clearly marked with Ben-Gurion Airport stamps as well.

According to the source, the politicians made their first trips to Israel after the Iraqi elections, held on January 2010, until around October that same year. The officer claimed that during questioning of the Iraqis, it was discovered that they were operating as envoys to Israel on behalf of Iraqi politicians.

In response to the report, Iraqi Parliament Member from the National Iraqi Alliance Mohammad Redha al-Khafaji declared that some 50 parliament members have already put their John Hancock to a bill proposing to ban such trips to Israel. Khafaji emphasized that in the past, Iraqi senior officials had visited Israel secretly.

Meanwhile, a member of the parliament's judicial committee said these signatures do not necessarily mean that such a law should be passed.

Forbidding a citizen from traveling is against the Iraqis' right to freedom, as written in the constitution. However banning travel to Israel has nothing to do with politics, she told Al Jazeera, explaining that Iraq has never had any diplomatic or political relations with Israel, nor has it acknowledged the State of Israel.
The West suffers from two delusions. One is that having elections means you have a democracy. And the other is that if an Arab or Muslim country has a democracy, it will no longer seek to destroy Israel.

They forget that after World War II, the allied powers occupied Japan and Germany for a number of years to root out the toxic effects of Nazism and fascism, before turning those countries over to their own citizens who were ready to behave in a democratic way. Neither of those occupations had any time limit, but when it was time to end them, the allies (at least on the Western side of the Berlin Wall and in Japan) ended them.

Of course, to be able to do that without turning your troops into target practice dummies you first have to utterly defeat the other side militarily to the point of surrender. Has any country surrendered to a Western power since Japan? Not that I can recall.

That would be Israel's delusion, too.

And therein lies the great fallacy of both George Bush and Barack Obama. You simply can't abandon literally everything that's ever been thought or written about governance and what a nation state really is, in the last 600 years and still be able to concoct any sort of functional society that doesn't rely on medieval brutality to keep from flying apart. "Nation Building" only ever made sense to a culture or society that had the basic need or desire to so much as understand what a 'nation' even is. Arab states were scratched out my map makers in the British foreign office based on the quaint dream that if you show them what to do they will want to do it and they will do it more or less the way you'd expect. But given the chance, every Arab nation has descended into fascism or anarchy based on the level of extreme violence a given leader or leaders was willing to apply. These are not states, any more than the Zeta drug cartel is a legitimate business model, any more than chattel slavery is a viable economic plan of action. So they ban travel to Israel? Good. I hope they stay home and make gang rape and IED's the national sports.

Good Post Empress Trudy.

At least since the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism in the last century, the honor-based (eg Arab/Muslim) society can only operate through totalitarian means: secular dictatorship or Islamic theocracy.

In such societies external appearances are everything and a sense of morality must be imposed from without, hence such unfathomables to secular humanist Westerners such as honor killing of rape victims by family members. Sadat was killed for his apparent outreach to Israel, Pakistani Christian politicians are assassinated if they speak their minds, even Abbas and his PLO is paralyzed. There are hundreds of current examples, all of which become very clear when seen this way. Islamic politicians' lifespans become very short if they accept anything Western, especially Israel.

This would contrast with our Western "guilt-based" mentality, in which our internal conscience for the most part governs, making possible such things as an internal moral compass, individualism and the sense of the sacredness of the other.

Hypocritical comment considering it was Republicans who started this, the Israeli left warned the war would be lost, and that Israel would be worst off.

So you see time and again, the left are proven right, and the deluded Republicans destroyed their country.

God's hand at work, the Iraqi's got rid of a secular Iraq, and the USA bankrupted itself and lost the war, and got no oil :)

That is what you call divine justice:)

The fruits of evil.......

Chayma,

Actually it was the Israeli government - and specifically its intelligence services - and not the Left, which suggested to the Bush administration that there was more to be gained from attacking Iran than Iraq.

Person of the Book

You are deluded and ignorant.
Honor killings are not Islamic, they predate Islam, Christians practice them, even in Greece till recent times, There was a Palestinian Christian family honor killing featured in the Guardian, Christiantiy existed before Islam in the Middle East, and honor killings existed then. Stupid one, it was Greece who gave honor killings to Jordan, it's a tribal patriarchial habit not an Islamic one. The rest of your post shows exactly why the USA is in trouble, too many ignoramus like you, who think they know us but know nothing about us. We created the West.

Carl

I am aware that the Mossad head warned it would be a failure. When I said the Israeli left, I meant the intelligence services. Right wingers don't last long there. The right were egging it on.

You are wrong or misinformed about Iran too. The intelligence services (Israeli) dont' support an attack on Iran. Never did. Though some rightists like to pretend otherwise.

I also meant that the American left were right, and they were proven right.

If Israel attacks Iran, it will be the beginning of the end for Israel. I am sure the Israeli left elite, as opposed to the right wing dreamers, are aware of that.
