Unbelievable: IDF commander punished over 'Palestinian' riot despite investigation absolving him

A year and a half ago, I warned that the IDF's open fire rules had essentially become no fire rules. Now, the IDF has confirmed that is the case by disciplining a commander whose troops killed a 34-year old 'Palestinian' rioter because they believed - correctly, according to the IDF's own investigation - that their lives were in danger. The commander has been relieved of duty, which (as I understand it) essentially means he's been discharged from the army (Hat Tip: Norman F via comments).
The riot took place weeks ago, as Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas prepared to address the United Nations. Hours before the address, a group of PA men from Kfar Qusra near Ramallah began to attack IDF soldiers nearby with rocks.

The attack followed a PA assault on the Jewish village of Esh Kodesh. PA Arabs initially blamed the attack on Jews living in the village, but later investigation showed that Jews had not approached Kfar Qusra at any point during the day.

Soldiers responded with non-violent means of riot dispersal, primarily tear gas. However, before they could drive the rioters away, a group of attackers managed to get close to three soldiers and hurl large rocks at them from a short distance.

Fearing for their lives, the soldiers opened fire, hitting and killing 34-year-old Issam Badaran. A subsequent IDF investigation found that the soldiers’ lives had been in danger and their actions were justified.
How about that? In addition to having an army that for five years did not so much as develop a plan to rescue a captured soldier, we also have an army that doesn't allow its soldiers to defend themselves in the immediate line of fire!

What could go wrong?

UPDATE 10:56 AM

YNet adds:
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said that the decision to decommission the Haruv Battalion lieutenant was also based on a prior record.

"The officer was dismissed following several operational and disciplinary events," a statement said.
Well, if they were like this one, he should not have been dismissed.

Carl - in a normal country, that unit would have been held up as an example to the rest of the army and its commander would have been given medals and a promotion.

So the message to commanders and soldiers is in effect, don't defend your lives because we won't back you up if you do. Its better to be dead than to be disgraced.

Unbelievable and true. The same country that couldn't figure out how to rescue Gilad Shalit has now effectively tied the hands of its own military. With the kind of brass running the IDF who make stupid decisions like that, its any wonder any one would want to die for them.

What would go wrong indeed

The wider point is don't use the army for these events, use the police. That's their job.

I gotta marvel at NormanF's "normal country"

A normal country would have an equal adversary, which means an equal military. Quite the obfuscator arn't you NormanF

You're moaning about what? Stones being thrown? Fair enough. Your lopsided myopic immoral case lacks one important qualifier to even make it worth discussing:

Did you also warn a year ago, that the Palestinians have no army to fight with? Did you warn that they need a military equal to what Israel has complete with nuclear arsenel? If they had that, and you complained of stone throwing, one could respect your argument...

As it stands..

Well it doesn't stand.

"Did you also warn a year ago, that the Palestinians have no army to fight with?" --- This is your argument? So you are saying that Israel should treat this as a war and use full military force against its enemies. We all know if the day ever came when Palestinians can equal Israel’s military strength they will try to annihilate Israel. And if the shoe were on the other foot the Palestinians would have already destroyed Israel and killed every Jew they could find. I think the Palestinians should thank their G-d every day that Israel does not have the morals [or lack their of] that the muslims have.

Free,

You obviously have trouble reading and understanding. You don't know what you're talking about half the time, stay out of my way. As if a future prediction justifies a current scenario, you total moral bankrupt.

By the way, are you blind too? My post was not addressed to you. Go and get an education, ignoramus.

If I were blind how could have I read any of the comments. Stay out of your way? This is the internet, nothing I do gets in your way. I am sorry you have trouble understanding the things I write, you should look to your own education, not mine. Coming from the defender of terrorists, calling me morally bankrupt doesn't mean much to me. I usually just read your posts and laugh at what a fool you look like.
