Breaking: Manhattan JCC threatens Carl in Jerusalem

I just got this in an email from Manhattan JCC:
I just want to make you are aware that you are using our logo without permission. You will be hearing from our lawyers shortly. Please remove it from your blog post immediately.
The email was signed by someone with a very pompous sounding title.

The original post - minus the logo - is here. The post speaks against the Manhattan JCC's support for BDS.

Jewish Federation money at work? I hope not.

Carl - let them try to sue you in an Israeli court. Sounds like a SLAPP lawsuit threat to me.

Tell those SOBs from the Manhattan JCC to go take a hike!

Fair usage, no, Carl?

You're a lawyer. You tell us. And if so, put it back up and tell the JCC to kiss their own tuchuses.

US Copyright Office - Fair Use

You're OK. Put the logo back up and spit on the JCC.

You shouldn't have taken it down so quickly. It would have made for a better story to hear from their lawyer first.

If there is a lawsuit, at least it would focus a lot of attention on the JCC's dirty dealings with anti-Israel groups. And I don't think there is anything inappropriate about displaying a group's logo in a blog post.

Clearly within "Fair Use" Exception. Also, the law actually encourages nominative ways of using logo. What a bunch of tools, in my humble opinion.

I had pulled my posing in anticipation of being able to resolve the issue, but to no avail. Restating what I had posted, do not worry about such law suit threats. They have engaged in the threat of a SLAPP Suit, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, an act to silence you. I am not a lawyer, but the way I see it, you had used the logo in fair use as you did not claim to be or represent the JCC.

I too had a veiled threat from them, but they retracted it after I mentioned the law.

Regardless, on one hand they say sent me an official statement saying they do not support or work with BDS organizations, and on the other JStreet is a partner / sponsor, whatever they want to call it, of the film festival they put together.
