Syria ambivalent on Ford appointment

In response to the appointment of Robert Ford as the U.S. ambassador to Syria, which ended a five year hiatus, Syria's ambassador to Lebanon, 'Ali 'Abd Al-Karim, said that the appointment had come very late, and expressed hope for a change in the U.S. policy in the region.What could go wrong?
The Syrian government press reported on the nomination only briefly, citing a French news agency.
