That offensive British advertising ban

Shavua tov, a good week to everyone.

Earlier this week, I reported that Britain's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) had decided that Israel may not advertise the Western Wall (Kotel) as being in Israel. Jonathan Tobin puts his finger on just what is so offensive about the ASA's statement.
Moreover, there is something profoundly offensive about a foreign government claiming that the most sacred shrine in Judaism — the Western Wall — is part of what the Guardian calls “the Palestinian occupied territories.” Though this UK pronouncement will do little damage to Israel, it does represent the lengths to which Israel’s enemies will go in their efforts to delegitimize the Jewish presence in Jerusalem and the entire country. If Britain thinks Jews have no right to call the Kotel their own, then what hope is there of convincing it that Jews have a right to live anywhere in their country?

Read the whole thing.

Indeed there is something profoundly offensive about a foreign government claiming Jerusalem does not belong to Jews.

It is exactly that profoundly offensive "libel" that most assuredly is born from Antisemitism.

What drives my anger is that Bush blew his legacy because he threw his "promise" to sign the embassy act out the window. (our best friend) The bottom line here is that had he signed it, that alone would have given legitimacy to Jerusalem. Not for us for nothing in our minds is more holy and solely legitimate as the Kotel and the beautiful city which surrounds it. Signing it was for all the rest. I will never forgive being deceived and betrayed. For that I do not blame the Brit's nearly as I do the President who claimed Jerusalem as part of his heart as Israel his best friend. A simple pen to paper would have ended this whole ugly effort to de-legitimize the symbolism and sanctity of Jerusalem.

The Saudi's applauded George Bush each time he axed the embassy act. They still laugh. So does his father, James Baker and the House of Saud. To me they fit in with all the rest.

Bush was our only hope and he blew it. Personally, I will never be so deceived again. I know who our enemies are for one sits in the white-house and others sit across the globe. It is those who profess to be my friend that makes this act of deception so utterly unforgivable.

I applaud Eli Wiesel for his full page ads. They were wonderful and made me cry. It was not only a tribute to his precious departed mother ripped from him by Nazi madmen but worse a cold heartless world who sat and watched it happen. It was a beautiful tribute to her song which words she sang to him of our biblical Jerusalem which always and forever as Wiesel stated: "Means far more to him than politics."

Its the height of chutzpah for the British to lecture to Israel about the Kotel. They prevented Jews from praying freely at it when they ruled the country and that hasn't been forgotten. I didn't hear them say a word when their ally Jordan annexed "east" Jerusalem, ethnically cleansed the Jews out of it, desecrated graves and synagogues and forbade Jews to pray at the Kotel. The only time they find their voice is when the Jews now have the city. Do they imagine Israel would ever give it up?

Its offensive in more ways than one and Israel has the right to its position on Jerusalem, which is moreover the truth.
