Obama: 'Iran has a right to nukes'

President Obama told the BBC on Tuesday that he believes that Iran has a 'right' to nuclear energy (Hat Tip: Gateway Pundit).
President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.

In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, he also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.

"What I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations," Obama said, adding that the international community also "has a very real interest" in preventing a nuclear arms race.

...

"What we want to do is open a dialogue," Obama told the BBC. "You know, there are misapprehensions about the West, on the part of the Muslim world. And, obviously, there are some big misapprehensions about the Muslim world when it comes to those of us in the West."
Iran is sitting on one of the largest supplies of oil in the world. Yes, they have a problem with refined oil products like gasoline for your car. But imagine if all that money they have spent on acquiring nuclear weapons energy had been spent on building oil refineries.

Sorry, but Iran has made it quite clear through its threats at Israel that nuclear energy is not what they are after.

In The Corner, Michael Rubin slams Obama from another angle.
By restating Iran's right to nuclear power he not only ensured that the United States would negotiate any safeguards from a weakened position, but he also gave Pres. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a huge victory just ten days before the Iranian election.
Yes. But this is just another mis-step that's so blatantly stupid if you're trying to play up your strengths, that it's hard to escape the conclusion that Obama wants to let Iran go nuclear.

In view of his failure to stand up to North Korea, Obama's resignation to the inevitability of a nuclear Iran comes as no surprise. It is in striking contrast to his toughness vis a vis Israel.

What could go wrong indeed
