Bolton on Iran

This is part of a much lengthier post on a talk that former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton gave at the Carlton Hotel in New York on Monday night. The talk covered many other subjects besides Iran.
Mr. Bolton stated that under Obama, the USA will positively NOT attack Iran. He labeled the chance of a US attack as between “slim and none.” However, he sees it as likely for Israel to attack Iran. However, an Israeli attack is filled with peril. He believes that Obama WILL NOT support an Israeli attack, and thus Israel would have to attack without America giving the okay to use Iraqi airspace. The trip between Israel and Iran is several thousand miles, very perilous, and fraught with danger. (one of which would be a Hizballah strike in response) However, the danger of not attacking will probably outweigh the danger of attacking, at least for Israel.

Mr. Bolton said that an Iran with nukes is unacceptable. Specifically, this means that Israel would exist at Iran’s sufferance. There also is absolutely no mutually assured destruction, and the mullahs of Iran welcome death.

Finally, John Bolton stated that a nuclear Iran will cause (and already is causing) a nuclear arms race in the Mideast. Sunni states are very concerned about a Shia nuke, in part because these Sunni states have problems with Shia minorities within their own countries (and Iran funds terror groups around the world). As such, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are all seeking nuclear bombs. This makes the world extremely unsafe – to have a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
He's right about that.

Carl - every one assumes it has to be an airborne attack. An Israeli sub in the Arabian Gulf could launch a Jericho II missile equipped with an EMP warhead. Exploded at a low altitude over Iran, it will destroy the country's ability to not only produce nuclear weapons but to retaliate against Israel. And such an attack would be virtually impossible for Iran to counter. And Israel wouldn't need to coordinate with the US to carry it out. It would be highly effective with a low to nil casualty risk to Israel. Will it happen? This may be the first time in Israeli history that the Navy rather than than Air Force could be tasked with saving the country from an Iranian bomb. So its not like Israel has only one option to address to Iran in the event it decides to take that decision.

I only wish that John Bolton were president and not Barack Obama. I can wish, can't I?

The mullahs of Iran are more inclined to watch others fanaticals do the dying for them then they are dying themselves. An attack on the Jewish State would mean total destruction for them.

I've never heard of a time when even Osama Bin Laden was willing to strap on a bomb and blow himself up for his ideology.

Please provide an historical example of a nation that commited suicide for the purpose of exterminating a people. Those that risked such an endeavor wanted to see tomorrow.
