The foreign relations experts at the State Department care more about not insulting the Islamists than they do about U.S. national interests.
@Oakes Spalding: According to Hurriyet, only one section of the crowd was doing it, and was also chanting nationalist slogans during the game. Sounds like agitators, there for a purpose.

Turkey was a loyal NATO member when the enemy was Russia. But the Cold War is over, and Turkey also has a set of roots which never was Kemalist.
Has this been verified? I've heard different things about what they're actually chanting.
